Advocacy
We need your voice. Help us advocate to change
the attitudes and budget priorities that lead to inadequate funding for developmental
disability services in Johnson County. The majority of dollars used to support people
with disabilities comes directly from state and federal sources, advocates for
persons with disabilities need to be aware of how they can influence decisions
made at the state and federal levels. Together, we can make a difference!
2011 Legislative Goals
Eliminate the Developmental Disability (DD) Waiting List: There are more than 4,100 people on the statewide DD waiting list. These children and adults are waiting for funding in which to purchase critical services. More than 650 of these individuals reside in Johnson County.
Increase the reimbursement rates paid to community DD providers: Provider agencies are significantly understaffed due to the inability to hire qualified staff willing to work for low wages. Community provider rates should have parity with their counterparts in the state-funded DD institutions. Community wages must increase to attract, train and retain qualified staff.
Get to know your legislators
The first step of advocacy is to be familiar with your legislators. You can look up your senator and representative HERE. The next step is to establish a relationship by calling, e-mailing or sending hand-written letters to your legislators. Click HERE for the advocacy tool kit which includes a sample letter.
Invisible Kansans
In 2009, Interhab, a statewide DD advocacy organization, started the"Invisible Kansans" campaign. The campaign aimed to inform the public about the DD waiting list and the inadequate community provider reimbursement rate. Visit the website at
